Which License Do I Need?

Georgia law requires that at least one operator in responsible charge of an Industrial wastewater treatment plant (pretreatment or NPDES discharge) must be licensed. Industrial operators can choose either the Biological or Industrial license, depending on the type of process, as described below:

The Industrial Wastewater Treatment Operator license covers Physical-Chemical wastewater system. This includes industries that treat wastewater by pH adjustment, coagulation, flocculation, metals precipitation, flotation, carbon adsorption (GAC), membrane filtration, ion exchange, etc. Industries that treat by Phys-Chem systems include metal finishing operations, food processing, mining, groundwater remediation, industrial laundries, chemical plants, both pretreatment facilities (indirect discharge to a sewer system), and NPDES (direct discharges).

Biological Treatment training courses cover the operations of activated sludge plants, ponds, trickling filters, and bioreactors. Operators from textiles, food processing, petroleum refineries, pulp & paper, chemical companies and municipalities have benefited from this program.

Click here to print a brief discussion of the Georgia Industrial license requirements. For more information, refer to Rules of the Georgia Water/Wastewater Board, Chapter 750, which can be found on the state’s website http://www.sos.state.ga.us/plb/water or call the Georgia Water/Wastewater Board at (478) 207-2440.

Learn Phys/Chem treatment and prepare for the Georgia Wastewater Industrial Operator licensing exam. The course also provides 12 Continuing Education (CE) Points. The Sacramento manual, Industrial Wastes, Vol. 1, 3rd edition, is used as the course textbook. Open enrollment or onsite courses for ten attendees or more. Topics include:

  • Georgia Certification Requirements
  • Discharge Permits, Sampling
  • Industrial Wastewater Characteristics
  • Flow Measurement, Equalization, pH
  • Coagulation, Flocculation, Clarification
  • Treatment of Metal Wastes
  • Oil & Grease, Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF)
  • Filtration, Granular Activated Carbon (GAC)
  • Solids Handling & Dewatering
  • Applied Math Practice
  • Treatment Plant Tour

Biological Class 3 Wastewater Treatment
5 days --- 12 CE Points

For industries operating activated sludge plants, SBR’s, ponds, trickling filters or bioreactors. A good way to prepare for the Biological Wastewater Operator Class 3 exam, or receive 12 CE Points. Topics include:

  • Georgia Certification Requirements
  • Discharge Permits, Sampling
  • Applied Math Practice
  • Preliminary - Screening, Grit Removal
  • Primary and Secondary Treatment Processes
  • Activated Sludge Process
  • Microbiology, Filamentous Bacteria
  • Aerobic and Anaerobic Digestion
  • Disinfection, Dechlorination
  • Solids Handling & Dewatering
  • Treatment Plant Tour

Wastewater Laboratory Analyst
4 days --- 12 CE Points

We realize the wastewater laboratory analyst exam is one of the toughest! So we go over basic chemistry principles geared towards non-chemists. Lots of practice questions and discussions help prepare for the exam. Also applies for the 12-hr laboratory training requirement for the Biological Grade 2 Operator. Topics include:

  • Solution Chemistry, Molarity, Normality
  • Sample Collection and Preservation
  • Laboratory Safety
  • Methods of Analysis
  • Overview of Treatment Plant Operations
  • Applied Math Problems
  • Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC)
  • Standard Methods procedures for Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Chlorine Residual, Ammonia and TKN, Oil & Grease, TSS, Phosphorus, Coliform Group, etc.
