South Carolina Wastewater Courses

Environmental Training Associates presents wastewater courses that are approved by the SC Department of Health & Environmental Control (DEHC) to help operators

  • Learn Industrial wastewater treatment technologies
  • Prepare for certification exams, and
  • Meet Continuing Education requirements.

Courses presented by Environmental Training Associates include A, B, C, and D-Level Physical-Chemical Wastewater Treatment, Biological Wastewater Treatment, Wastewater Laboratory Analyst, and a variety of Continuing Education Courses. Courses may be customized and taught onsite for groups of ten or more.

Basic courses utilize the SC “Standards of Performance”, a course notebook, handouts, practice questions, and the Sacramento Manuals are used as the reference text. Basic courses may include a plant tour to a local wastewater facility.

About the Physical-Chemical Wastewater License

(This summary is for information purposes only. For details, refer to the SC Environmental Certification Regulations, Chapter 51. For more information, go to the state’s website www.llr.state.sc.us/POL/Environmental or call DEHC at 803-896-4430).

The SC Department of Health & Environmental Control (DEHC) classifies wastewater facilities based on the size, characterization, effluent receiving stream, and type and complexity of treatment. Industrial wastewater plants utilizing Physical/Chemical (P/C) treatment are classified as Group I-IV if they include one or more of the following unit operations:

Group I – P/C. Primary settling, equalization, pH control, and oil skimming.

Group II - P/C. Units listed above, sludge storage, dissolved air flotation (DAF), and clarification.

Group III - P/C. Units listed above, oxidation/reduction, reactions, cyanide destruction, metals precipitation, sludge dewatering, and air stripping.

Group IV-P/C. Units listed above, membrane technology, ion exchange, tertiary chemicals, and electrochemistry.

Wastewater operators must hold a license issued by the Environmental Certification Board. The Operator in Responsible Charge (ORC) must be licensed at a level no lower than DHEC designation for that plant, as follows:

Group I-PC          ORC at least “D” level
Group II-P/C        ORC at least “C” level
Group III-P/C        ORC at least “B” level
Group IV-P/C        ORC at least “A” level

Continuing Education

Between July 1and June 30 of every odd-numbered year, every licensed operator must obtain a total of 12 hours of continuing education (CEUs). Six (6) hours must be obtained in the area of core competency dealing with support systems and unit process/process control. Operators passing an exam of the same or higher grade receive 12 hours.

SC Department of Health & Environmental Control (DEHC) has put together a list of Approved Subject Matter for Continuing Education Requirements.
