State Licensing Requirements
Each state varies in their wastewater licensing and certification requirements. Grade levels are based on the types of treatment (Municipal or Industrial) and complexity of plant unit operations.
Operators must fulfill work experience and education requirements to be eligible to sit for state licensing exams. A minimum of a high school diploma or GED is required. Training classes may be required or recommended. Many states are transitioning to online testing. Typically 70% is required to pass the exam.
Many states require licensed operators to obtain Continuing Education (CE) Points or Technical Contact Hours (TCH) every year or every other year. ETA offers one- and two-day, Board-approved classes to help operators meet recertification requirements. Classes are continually updated to reflect changing requirements, and can be customized for your particular treatment process. Contact us about developing site-specific training for your facility.
A summary of requirements for Industrial operators is provided below. Please refer to your state agency's website for specific requirements that apply to your facility.
